Nurse Angel’s Tips for Treating Seasonal Allergies

  1. Stay Inside. The best way to treat allergy symptoms is to avoid allergens to begin with, stay indoors as much as possible.

Pollen is usually at its peak mid-morning, early evening, and when the wind is blowing.

Tune into your local news channel or weather station to see Pollen counts for the week.

  1. Stuffy Nose No More.  For relief try a normal saline nasal spray.  

*Your parent can buy saline at the drugstore OTC or make your own by mixing in a squirt bottle 8 ounces of boiled water to 1 teaspoon non-iodized salt.*

  1. Image result for steam clip artWarm It Up. Steam from a warm shower or bath can help unclog a stuffy nose.  Make sure the shower is not too hot.
  2. Image result for air conditioner clip artKeep It Cool. Use air condition in your car and home. Keep windows closed.
  3. Dry Air/Stuffy Room? A Cool Mist Humidifier will give a dry air room enough moisture in the air makes breathing easier and lessens the chances of nose bleeds.
  4. Image result for warm compress clip artGo Cold. When itchy eyes are driving you crazy, try a cold compress, which may help reduce the itch, soreness, swelling and redness.  DON’T RUB YOUR EYES!!!!
  5. Image result for rubbing eye clip artKeep Your Hands to Yourself.  Avoid rubbing your itchy, watery eyes. Rubbing will only irritate them more -- and could make the itchiness, redness and swelling worse.

 WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN!!!!    

  1. Spice It Up.  Do you like spicy foods?  A meal made with a little cayenne pepper, hot ginger, fenugreek, onions, or garlic may help thin mucus and clear nasal passages.
  2. Use Top Tissues.  Tender noses can get sore pretty fast and dry. Look for tissues with lotion or aloe.  DON’T BE CHEAP, your nose will thank you later!
  3. Rub Jelly on It.  If you used cheap tissues your nose is probably raw and red from blowing, you can soothe the pain with a dab of petroleum jelly or palmer’s coco butter.
  4. Gargle to Relieve Sore Throats.  Coughing can gargling with warm saltwater made of 1-2 tablespoons of table salt in 8 ounces of water may ease the pain.
  5. Drink Warm Tea. Drinking more fluids can also help soothe tender throats. Try tea with honey and lemon. Bonus: The steam may relieve stuffy nose caused by sinus congestion, too!
  6. Image result for warm compress clip artGet Face Time. Warm compresses applied to the face may also help soothe a sinus pressure and pain.
  7. Stay Hydrated. All that sneezing and blowing can leave you parched. Keep a cold water bottle full and close so you can keep sipping.

Tis the Season to be  . . . Moisturized

Along with the joys of big meals, gift giving, and snowball fights the winter months can also cause major damage to your family’s skin! The dry and frigid winter air and extreme indoor heat are two of the main culprits responsible for sucking all the nutrients from skin. Fortunately there are things we can do to fight back, and keep our skin soft and supple!

 

Shower Power: Hot and steamy showers feel great after venturing out in the freezing weather; unfortunately hot water tends to dry out skin. Instead try showering in warm water.

Lotion-ize: Lotion is a powerful tool in the war against dry skin, and there are as many different types of lotion as there are people! For sensitive skin try using a fragrance-free or hypoallergenic lotion. Lotion should be applied to the skin after showers and whenever the skin is feeling itchy, flaky, or dry. Lotion Alterative: Baby oil gel

Soap: Many people feel as though soap is just soap, however many varieties of soap can actually cause skin to dry! Soaps and body washes with high fragrance content may also irritate skin. Try choosing a soap or body wash with nourishing or moisturizing written on the label, and for sensitive akin hypo-allergenic is always a great choice!

Eczema: Often flares up when the weather has dramatically changed and causes discomfort from mild itching to severe cracked and bleeding skin. At this time you should seek a Dermatologist to treat the discomfort.

 Soaps and body washes can make eczema flare ups worse.

Alternatives to Soap/Bodywash: Using a cap full of Bath & Shower oil in a luke warm bath. Bath for no longer than 15min and limit soap to important areas that harbor odor. Pat dry with towel or air dry, DO NOT RUB!

EX: Alpha Keri Bath Oil, Aveeno Bath & Shower Oil, Eucerin Bath & Shower Oil or any Walgreens/CVS Store brand of Bath & Shower oil. Aveeno Oatmeal Bath can also be used to help relieve itchy skin.

Kiss Chapped lips goodbye: During these dry winter months children’s lips can become cracked, irritated, and painful! Encourage your child to moisturize lips with balms, chapstick, blistex, or Vaseline.

Tips to Prevent Frost Bite

                                            Symptoms

Frostnip is a mild case of cold skin where the skin may appear yellowish or white but feels soft if touched.  The skin feels painful with tingling or burning sensation.

Superficial frostbite is the typical “pins and needles” sensation followed by numbness.  Sometime there is aching or throbbing with hard, pale and cold skin that has been exposed to cold for too long.  You can have a lack of sensation, if someone touches you, you may not feel it.  The skin becomes red and painful as the area warms up.

Severe frostbite is characterized by blisters, blackened and dead tissue known as gangrene and damaged tendons, muscles, nerves and bone.

          Treatment

Move to a warm location as quickly as possible.

Soak the skin in luke warm (NOT HOT) water.

Do not massage the area, do not use a heating pad and do not warm the area excessively fast.  For frostbitten fingers, try placing hands under the armpit.  Do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes.

          PREVENTION

Dress Smart:  wind-proof, water-resistant layering clothing, mittens not gloves, hats and scarfs that covers ears and neck.

          SEEK HELP IMMEDIATELY

When you feel stiff muscles, you face becomes puffy, your speech is slurred, you shiver uncontrollably or have mental confusion call 911.

Fall is here and I would like to take this opportunity to pass on some helpful information.

                                       Dress for the weather

Morning at the bus stop are often cold while later it can be quite warm at recess. Dressing in layers will enable your child to be warm and comfortable with our ever changing weather.


                            Protect yourself from ticks and mosquitoes:

Avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. If you must be outside wear long sleeves and pants. Use bug repellent safely. Remove any free standing water in or around your home. Check your body for ticks after being in brushy, wooded or grassy areas.Ticks will often find their way to less obvious places like between toes, along the hairline, armpits and groin area.

Monitor any bug bite sites for a bull’s eye like appearance or persistent flu like symptoms that are not improving. See your doctor with any questions or concerns.

Flu season


Cold and flu season will be here before you know it.Discuss with your physician whether it is appropriate to get a flu shot. In the meantime these basics will help keep you healthy.


. remind your child to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and dispose of the tissue immediately.


.Have your child wash his/her hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds(long enough to sing Happy Birthday)


.Disinfect frequently -touched surfaces and shared items(ex:toys) at least once a day and ensure that bathrooms are stocked with soap,hand towels and tissues.


.Getting a good night sleep and eating healthy foods will provide your body with the stamina it needs to get through the day and fight off viruses.


if your child becomes ill and feels he or she cannot participate in all of the school’s daily activities,or is experiencing any of the following:high/low grade fevers,severe headache,muscle and body aches,exhaustion,irritability,dry or hacking cough,nausea,vomiting and/ or diarrhea.Keep them home to help prevent spread of illness to others and make an appointment with your pediatrician to be checked out.


A signed doctor’s note is required for all illness
